Response to Clinic Protestors
In July 2014, the radical antichoice group Operation Rescue/Operation Save America descended upon New Orleans to terrorize patients, providers, staff, and the general public.
The New Orleans Abortion Fund, in partnership with Feminist Majority Foundation and members of the Louisiana Coalition for Reproductive Freedom (LCRF), organized a series of trainings for clinic escorts and legal observers to ensure the safety and security of our communities. Dozens of volunteers came, united in the effort to destimatize abortion and stand in solidarity with patients. We also hosted a candlelight vigil for choice and access, featuring an open microphone for story-sharing. Over 100 community members attended to remember the 299 acts of clinic violence reported in 2013, and to speak out for justice.
Additionally, the New Orleans Abortion Fund sponsored a "Pledge-a-Protestor" drive. Each individual at an open clinic was counted, and individuals from around the country pledged a certain amount "in honor of" these protestors. We turned their harassment and intimidation into a tangible force for social justice! 312 individuals were counted at open clinics.*
If you would like to make a donation in their honor, you still can! Please visit our paypal page or mail a check to NOAF.
Any amount is appreciated:
Give them your two cents = $6.24
$0.10/protestor = $31.20
$.25/protestor = $78
*We only counted individuals who were harassing patients seeking abortions. This number excludes those who were at the providers' homes, physician's private practices, on street corners, etc.
